Victory Over Genocide Day

Victory Over Genocide Day

7 January 2027
Nationwide
Victory Over Genocide Day, observed annually on January 7, is a solemn national day of remembrance in Cambodia honoring the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. This day marks the 1979 liberation from one of the darkest chapters in the country's history. Throughout Cambodia, various ceremonies and events take place to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and to reflect on the resilience of the Cambodian people. Key locations such as the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum hold commemorative events, attracting locals and visitors alike. The day is marked by moments of silence, laying wreaths, and educational programs aimed at fostering awareness and remembrance. Attendance is respectful and subdued, providing a space for reflection rather than celebration. Visitors interested in understanding Cambodia’s recent history may find it meaningful to participate in the observances or visit the associated historical sites on this day. Public transport and roads may be busier due to ceremonies and official gatherings, so planning ahead is advisable. Victory Over Genocide Day is an opportunity to acknowledge Cambodia’s past and honor its ongoing journey towards healing and peace.

Tips for Attending

  • •Dress respectfully in modest, dark or subdued clothing to honor the solemn nature of the day.
  • •Arrive early at commemorative sites to find seating or space for ceremonies.
  • •Maintain quiet and respectful behavior during memorial services.
  • •Consider visiting the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center or Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum to deepen understanding of the history.
  • •Check local schedules ahead of time as events may be organized nationwide.

Practical Information

Budget: Attending ceremonies is free; visiting memorial sites usually involves a small entrance fee (around $3-$5 USD).. Duration: Observances typically last several hours, but visitors may choose how long to stay depending on interest and schedule.. Food Drink: Local eateries will be open, but expect some closures near official event areas; carry water and light snacks if attending outdoor ceremonies.. What To Wear: Wear conservative and modest clothing, preferably in dark or muted tones appropriate for a day of remembrance.. Getting There: Most venues, including key memorial sites in Phnom Penh, are accessible by taxi, tuk-tuk, or public bus. Plan for potential traffic delays near major event locations.. Booking Advice: No advance booking is required for public ceremonies, but if visiting museums, verify hours and ticketing in advance as they may have special hours on the day.

What sets my tour apart? My tour goes beyond typical sightseeing by combining Phnom Penh’s landmarks with hidden gems, offering travelers a deeper understanding of Cambodia’s history, culture, and daily life. From the Independence Monument and King Norodom Sihanouk Statue to the Royal Palace (exterior view) and National Museum, I share stories of Cambodia’s journey—from independence in 1953 to peace in 1993 and the nation’s growth today. What makes this tour unique is the personal storytelling of a licensed local guide, enriched with visits to a Buddhist monastery, lively alleyways, and vibrant markets like the Central Market and Night Market. Travelers not only see the sights but also experience the city’s resilience, spirituality, and modern vibrancy.
