Historical Background
The Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot from 1975 to 1979, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1.7 million people through forced labor, starvation, torture, and executions. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum was formerly a high school turned into Security Prison 21 (S-21), where prisoners were interrogated and tortured. The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek served as one of the main execution sites where mass graves hold victims of the regime.
