Preah Khan: The Sacred Sword Temple Complex

Preah Khan is located roughly 7 kilometers from Siem Reap town center. The most common way to reach it is by tuk-tuk, which typically costs between $15 and $20 for a full day temple circuit including Preah Khan. If you prefer more independence, renting a motorbike for around $7 daily or a bicycle for $2-$3 is also an option, though the temple is best accessed early to avoid the midday heat.

From the Angkor Wat area, Preah Khan is about a 15-minute drive east. Many visitors combine their visit with nearby temples such as Ta Prohm and Angkor Thom. The Angkor pass is required for entry; a 1-day ticket costs $37, while a 3-day pass is $62, which is practical if planning to see several temples.

Preah Khan was constructed in 1191 as a dedication to King Jayavarman VII's father and functioned as a multifunctional complex. It housed thousands of people, including priests, students, and military personnel, and featured schools, libraries, and hospital facilities. This reflects the temple's role beyond religion, serving as a hub for education and administration.

Wear comfortable shoes as the terrain includes uneven stones and some slippery areas due to moss. Photography is popular here, particularly the pillars and intricate carvings, but climbing on the ruins is prohibited to protect the site.

Opening hours are from 5 am to 6 pm, allowing early risers to catch sunrise at nearby temples and continue to Preah Khan as crowds build later. There are no entry fees specific to Preah Khan beyond the Angkor pass. It is advisable to carry small Cambodian riels or US dollars for water, snacks, or any minor purchases at the temple vicinity.
